1/48 Kubelwagen Type 82 Abt501 Diecast Model

1/48 Kubelwagen Type 82 sPzAbt.501, Maintenance Unit, HQ Company, Tunisia, 1943, #HG1202

In November 1938 Porsche completed a prototype vehicle based on the Volkswagen designated the Kubelwagen Type 62. Kubelwagen is short for Kübelsitzwagen, (bucket seat car). The Type 62 lacked good cross-country performance so ground clearance was increased and a modified gear ratio. This gave birth to the Type 82 and in 1940 mass production began at the Volkswagen factory. By early 1943 20,000 vehicles were produced with the total reaching 50,435 by the end of WWII. The Kubelwagen was to Germany what the jeep was to the Allies.

A special vehicle was required to withstand the harsh desert environment. The Kubelwagen was chosen because the engine was air cooled, light weight, good ground clearance and easy to maintain. In addition the desert Kubelwagens were equipped with large balloon-like tires that made it easy to operate in sand. The job of the sPzAbt 501 HQ Company Maintenance Service Unit was to keep Rommel’s Tigers operating during the last battles in Tunisia. The "J" on the doors signified the vehicle belonged to the Werkstatt (Maintenance Company).

Designed by Ferdinand Porsche as a low-cost and light-weight utility vehicle, the Kubelwagen prototype was completed in 1938 and entered full scale production in February 1940. The chassis design was initially derived from the highly successful Beetle while the bodywork was kept deliberately light-weight and functional. In fact, the name "Kubelwagen" literally translates to "Bucket Seat Car". Unlike the US Jeep, the Kubelwagen was a two-wheel drive vehicle but its high ground clearance and low gearing yielded excellent off-road performance and enabled it to keep pace with marching soldiers. The Kubelwagen was a mainstay of the German Military and saw action in every theater.

Hobby Master's 1:48 scale Kubelwagen is constructed almost entirely in diecast metal with plastic components used to accurately replicate scale details such delicate front and rear bumpers and side mounted mirrors. The open rag-top configuration provides a clear view of the Kubelwagon's interior, including a pad-printed instrument panel, simulated canvas seats, rifle rack and a complete set of driver's controls. The exterior is fitted with a separately applied spare wheel and shovel up front and pad-printed license plate at the rear. Axel skid plates, both front and rear, and twin exhausts are viewable on the model's underside.
